In April 2012, conservative author John Derbyshire sparked controversy (johnderbyshire.com) with his article “The Talk: Nonblack Version” (takimag.com), leading to his dismissal from National Review (amren.com, thepoliticalcesspool.org).

Item 10h from Derbyshire’s remarkably candid “talk that nonblack Americans have with their kids” proved particularly controversial.

The default principle in everyday personal encounters is, that as a fellow citizen, with the same rights and obligations as yourself, any individual black is entitled to the same courtesies you would extend to a nonblack citizen. That is basic good manners and good citizenship. In some unusual circumstances, however — e.g., paragraph (10h) below — this default principle should be overridden by considerations of personal safety.

(10) [W]hile always attentive to the particular qualities of individuals, on the many occasions where you have nothing to guide you but knowledge of those mean differences, use statistical common sense:

(10h) Do not act the Good Samaritan to blacks in apparent distress, e.g., on the highway.

• gawker.com: “Last week, writer John Derbyshire gained fast notoriety for a shockingly racist article ‘The Talk: Nonblack Version,’ in which he regurgitated a lot of tired racist stereotyping under the guise of ‘public safety’ for white people.”
• news.com.au: “He even suggests they should tell their children to avoid helping black people in distress.”
• twitchy.com: “While honest discussion of race relations is sorely needed in this country, telling your children not to help people in distress based on their skin color [...] is downright crazy talk.”
• gawker.com: “I’m not saying white people should accost John Derbyshire and shoot him with guns in his white neighborhood, then refuse to assist him when he lies in a state of ‘apparent distress,’ until he dies. Just that it’d be ironic.”

This article documents recent violence against Good Samaritans and other helpful and considerate people. This violence appears to be perpetrated exclusively by blacks (in the United States and Europe), Hispanics (in the US), Arabs and South Asians (in Europe and Canada), and Pacific Islanders (in Australia and New Zealand). The stories below illustrate the wisdom of John Derbyshire’s advice not to act the Good Samaritan to blacks and certain other racial minorities in apparent distress.

It’s a matter of self-defense.

“Wendy Fisher’s teenage daughter saw her mother gunned down” (al.com):

The fatal gun shot that cut down a single mother of two Saturday night occurred in front of her teenage daughter, family members said today.

The daughter, who asked that her name not be used, said she was standing in her front yard when her mother, Wendy Fisher, ran across the street to retrieve their dog.

Fisher yelled at a passing car to slow down because it nearly hit the pet, the daughter said. At that point a black man with short hair got out of the car, she said.

The daughter said she is not sure if he or one of the two or three other men inside the vehicle fired 3 shots. The man who exited the car was wearing blue jeans and a light T-shirt, she said.

All the men inside the car were black (al.com):

According to [police spokeswoman Ashley] Rains, the car involved was a dark gray or green Honda, Nissan Altima or similarly-styled vehicle occupied by three or possibly four black men. The car sped away from the scene after the shooting, Rains said.

Rob Russo, Wendy Fisher’s boyfriend, witnessed the shooting (al.com):

Fisher decided to let the dogs out, but they ran across the street to their neighbor’s front yard, he said.

They heard a speeding car approaching from a nearby hill, he said, and he urged Fisher to go get the dogs to keep them safe.

As the car passed, he said, “she told them to slow down — that’s all.”

He said he saw three doors open, and one man with a gun stood on the street and fired three shots without saying a word.

Fisher then cried out, “baby, baby, I’ve been shot, I’ve been shot,” he said.

She died at the University of South Alabama Medical Center a short time later.

Days later, 17-year-old Trayon Omar Washington was arrested for the crime during an (apparently unrelated) undercover drug operation (al.com).

The teen’s criminal history is impressive: “Washington has pending charges against him involving burglary, receiving stolen property and possession of and receiving a controlled substance.”

The records show Washington with a home address on Phillips Lane. That northwest Mobile street is situated off Moffett Road about a mile from Racine Avenue where Fisher was shot.

According to the Press-Register news archives, Mobile police arrested Washington and three others on Phillips Lane last October, after finding a car that had been stolen in Prichard.

At the time, police reported that several other people had been spotted fleeing the arrest scene.

Theft, burglary, cocaine, murder, speeding, endangerment of household pets — with teenagers like Trayon in the neighborhood, it is hardly surprising that after the shooting, Wendy Fisher’s neighbor told the Press-Register that it is “not the same neighborhood her parents moved into when they bought the house in 1961″ (al.com).

“It’s scary,” said the woman, who asked not to be identified. “This neighborhood has just gone downhill.”

Indeed: today, Mobile is majority black (census.gov).

Jul 2012: Deputy Bitten and Carjacked in Novel Motorist Trap (Russell County, AL)

“Deputy stops to help man, then was attacked and patrol car stolen” (wtvm.com):

A routine call for assistance over the weekend sent one Russell County deputy to the hospital after a supposed victim stole his patrol car.

A Russell County deputy was responding to a call for an injured man on Highway 431. When the deputy got out to help the man, that’s when the victim turned into the suspect.

Jatavis Brown, 24, was cooling off in the back of the patrol car and suddenly attacked the deputy who was helping him.

For the demographics of men named Jatavis, try an image search. (He’s black.)

“The guy jumps up, pushes the deputy, jumps in the driver seat of the patrol car,” said Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor.

After a struggle in the front of the car, Sheriff Taylor said Brown got the upper hand in the fight.

“The deputy was bit, the suspect bit him on his arm,” Sheriff Taylor said. “When he did, the deputy pulled back and at that point the man dropped the car into drive and took off. The deputy fell out of the car.”

A passing truck driver picked up the deputy and pursued Jatavis, who “wrecked out on the side of the road, hit a ditch, caused extensive damage to the car,” according to Sheriff Heath Taylor. Jatavis then fled to the woods, where he was finally captured.

Sheriff Taylor said an investigation into the case revealed Brown’s family said he was acting irrational and had actually tried to take another car earlier in the day. He will undergo a mental evaluation and is being held in the Russell County Jail.

It seems serial carjacking is now considered “acting irrational” and grounds for mental evaluation.

May 2012: “White Bitch” Viciously Beaten and Struck with Grape Soda over Littering Remark (Denver, CO)

“Woman attacked while ordering lunch at McDonald’s drive-thru” (wtsp.com):

Police are investigating a vicious beating at a McDonald’s drive-thru in Denver.

Shannon, who asked us not to use her last name, was the victim of an attack on May 9 just before noon.

She called our sister station KUSA 9News, and asked for help finding her attackers.

“I don’t feel safe anymore,” Shannon said.

The attack happened in the middle of the busy lunch hour at the McDonald’s on 3300 Colorado Boulevard near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Radio reference recorded dispatchers describing the attack, as multiple 911 calls came in.

“Two black females are inside. They’re fighting inside the car still in the drive-thru,” one dispatcher can be heard saying.

Shannon has been coming to the same drive-thru almost every day for five years without a problem… until this incident.

“I witnessed this young lady throwing trash out of her car and all I said was that it wasn’t cool,” Shannon said.

A few choice words later, Shannon thought the argument was over.

“All of a sudden I was being attacked,” Shannon said.

Two women jumped out of the car in front of her.

“She was right in my window just punching me in my face, pulling my hair,” Shannon said. “She started biting on my hands so severely. I thought she was gonna bite ‘em off, actually.”

Then a man jumped out of the car and threw a soda through her window.

“He said, ‘This is for you, you white [bitch]. This is a grape soda.’ And then they took off,” Shannon said.

The description of the suspects — two black women and one black man — is vague. The best clue police have to go on right now is they were driving a light-blue Cadillac with temporary tags.

May 2012: Severely Beaten over Discarded Beer Can (Washington, D.C.)

“DC man severely beaten after littering comment” (myfoxdc.com):

A D.C. man [picture below] has been in the hospital since Thursday after suffering a vicious beating. The assailant apparently became enraged after the victim asked him to pick up a discarded beer can.

On Thursday afternoon, as a 36-year-old resident was coming home through the alley, he observed a man [picture below] throwing a beer can to the ground. Police say the resident asked, “Would you please pick that up? I live in this building.”

The man responded with an expletive. The building security camera caught much of what happened next: the victim is hit hard in the back of the head. He falls to the ground. The assailant then steps over the victim, and appears to kick him in the face. The semi-conscious victim rolls on the ground, with the assailant apparently taunting him. The victim staggers to his feet, other people come down the adjoining alley, and the assailant withdraws.

He has been in a local hospital since Thursday, and got reconstructive surgery Saturday morning. His injuries were extensive.

“He has a broken jaw,” explained neighbor George Southworth. “He has, also, multiple fractures in his face. He has stitches on his forehead and stitches on his chin. And I believe there are some teeth that are loose.”

Unfortunately, the security video does not show the assailant’s face. Police describe him as a slim, light-skinned, black male, age 18-24, height 5-5 to 5-6. On Thursday he was wearing a black jacket, black pants, and a white shirt.

May 2012: Gunned Down in the Street by Canadians Shamsa Abdulkadir Noor and Hamed Mohamed Farah (Saskatoon, SK, Canada)

“Homicide victim ‘was acting as Good Samaritan,’ say Saskatoon police” (thestarphoenix.com):

Saskatoon police want more witnesses to a fatal shooting on the May long weekend to come forward with their accounts.

The man shot in Saskatoon’s third homicide of 2012 appears to have been an innocent victim who attempted to intervene in an altercation, police said Monday.

As the investigation into the May 21 killing continues, police said Macdonald George, 31, had no prior history with the Saskatoon Police Service. Investigators with the major crimes unit also believe George “was acting as a Good Samaritan and trying to stop an assault, against a person not known to him, when he was attacked and shot.”

George was with a group of co-workers at a downtown club on Second Avenue on Sunday, May 20, during the Victoria Day long weekend. He left the club around 2 a.m. and was shot in the street. He died later in hospital.

Shamsa Abdulkadir Noor, 24, is charged with second-degree murder in Saskatoon’s third homicide of 2012. Hamed Mohamed Farah, 21, is charged with being an accessory after the fact – namely, by allegedly helping Noor escape the scene.

Not exactly typical Canadian names.

Noor, of Toronto, and Farah, of Edmonton, were among four people allegedly found in that vehicle, where a .22-calibre handgun was also found.

All four were arrested on a number of weapons-related charges. The other two people facing charges are Lauren Elaine Garand, 23, of Saskatoon, who was released on $500 bail last week, and Zakaria Ahmad Mahamod, 19, of Toronto, who remains in custody.

Another unusual name for a Canadian — hey, wait a minute. Shamsa Abdulkadir Noor, Hamed Mohamed Farah, Zakaria Ahmad Mahamod, and Lauren Elaine Garand? Lauren appears to be the odd man out, as it were (thestarphoenix.com):

Lauren Elaine Garand was an “acquaintance at best” with the other three men she was in a car with, fleeing the scene of the fatal shooting of Macdonald George on the May long weekend, says her lawyer.

This isn’t the first time Garand has been the focus of a police investigation, StarPhoenix records show. Her record includes a conviction related to a dial-a-dope crack cocaine trafficking operation investigated by police in 2009.

Garand’s previous involvement with the criminal justice system resulted in a 15-month jail sentence. In July 2010, she pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of the proceeds of crime.

The charges were laid after a two-month investigation in 2009 into a group of people operating a dial-a-dope scheme, court heard at her sentencing. The four other co-accused in that case were Mohamed Farah Hassan, Luul A. Noor, Mohamad A. Adan and Mohamed Teclesenbet Meharzghi.

More unusual Canadian names.

May 2012: Stabbed to Death in Front of Family over Concern for Crying Child (London, England)

“Man stabbed to death in front of his family ‘for asking parents of crying child in restaurant if she was okay’” (dailymail.co.uk):

A father out celebrating his daughter’s birthday was brutally knifed to death in front of his horrified family just because he asked if a crying child was alright, a court was told yesterday.

Alan Smith [picture below], 63, was stabbed at least five times as he sat with his partner, daughter and son-in-law in a cafe in east London.

His alleged killer, Matthew Quesada, became enraged when Mr Smith approached him in the BB Cafe to ask if his young daughter, who was crying, was okay, the jury heard.

Quesada responded ‘What’s it to you? What’s it got to f****** do with you?’ before storming out of the cafe.

‘Humiliated and angered’ by what happened and ‘bent on exacting revenge’ Quesada, then aged 25, ran to his girlfriend’s home to drop off the girl and grab a weapon.

With a knife concealed up his sleeve, [he] then raced after the family as they entered a second diner — the Roma cafe — where they had gone to eat to avoid any further trouble.

It was there that Quesada allegedly launched a ‘frenzied and wordless’ attack, stabbing Mr Smith in the head and body.

As Estelle Jenkins tried to get between her father and his attacker, Mr Smith struggled up from the bolted down table before falling to the floor where he kicked out in a vain attempt to stop the onslaught, the court heard.

Quesada only fled when the victim’s son-in law Mark Jenkins threw a chair at him, halting the attack, as Mr Smith’s horrified partner Denise Facey looked on, the court was told.

Warded off by Mr Jenkins, Quesada was spotted jumping over the back gardens from his girlfriend’s flat before getting into a waiting car and speeding off.

A day later Quesada who had shaven off his distinct Afro style hair and changed his clothes was arrested along with his mother Victoria Passley-Quesada inside her car in south London.

He had on him his British passport, flight details for that day’s flights to Sao Paulo in Brazil, along with a holdall.

His mother Passley-Quesada [picture above], 54, of Purley, Surrey, is accused of hiding him from the police, looking up flights, and helping him in his bid to escape.

His girlfriend Maria Brigette [picture below], 26, of Hibbard Road, Leyton, east London, is accused of updating him on the police investigation. Both deny assisting an offender.

Apr 2012: Stomped by “Trayvon” Mob for Stopping Serial Mugger (Gainesville, FL)

“‘Trayvon’ shouted as group attacks Good Samaritan” (gainesville.com):

The name of Trayvon Martin was invoked again Wednesday night in Gainesville during an attack by a group that police say stomped on a white man who was scuffling with a black robbery suspect on the Bo Diddley Community Plaza.

The robbery suspect, Carl Milton Babb, 50, had been released from prison earlier in the day after serving more than two years in prison for the same crime he is accused of committing Wednesday — snatching a purse from a woman near the downtown plaza.

According to a Gainesville Police Department arrest report, Babb approached a woman eating dinner at the Lunchbox on the plaza at about 8:50 p.m. and asked her for a light.

When she said she didn’t have one, Babb took off with her purse, which contained her $500 cellphone, according to the report.

The woman’s dinner companion and another person took off after Babb.

When her friend caught up with Babb, according to the police report, Babb punched him in the face and grabbed his hair, but he was able to keep Babb pinned down, according to the report.

The scene attracted a crowd, and a number of people on the plaza approached Babb and the Good Samaritan, who tried to explain that Babb had just stolen his friend’s purse.

GPD spokeswoman Cpl. Angelina Valuri said some members of the crowd shouted “Trayvon!” and that at least three of members of the crowd began stomping on the hands of the woman’s friend to force him to let go of Babb.

Obviously, the mob was black as well.

More on Carl Milton Babb:

Babb was released Wednesday from Holmes Correctional Institution in Bonifay after serving two years and two months after he was convicted of felony battery and petit theft for a purse snatching.

The site of those crimes? The Bo Diddley Community Plaza.

On Wednesday night, Babb was charged with robbery, a third-degree felony, and battery, a first-degree misdemeanor, in connection with the latest purse snatching.

According to the DOC’s offender database, Babb spent much of the 1980s and early 1990s in prison for burglary and theft and was imprisoned from May 2, 2005, to March 31, 2009, for burglaries and thefts that occurred in late 2004.

Less than a year later, on Feb. 1, 2010, his latest sentence began.

Apr 2012: Robbed at Gunpoint in Motorist Trap, Made to Lie in Ditch (Cordele, GA)

“Motorist robbed at gunpoint” (cordeledispatch.com):

A local man was robbed at gunpoint, then forced to lie in a ditch as he traveled eastbound on Cemetery Rd. Thursday afternoon. Three people have been arrested in connection with the crime.

Sheriff Donnie Haralson said deputies were called to the scene of the robbery just after 3 p.m. where they talked with the victim. He told them that a male offender stopped in front of his vehicle, then the offender exited his vehicle and walked back to the victim’s vehicle after the victim also stopped.

Initially, the victim told officers, he thought the man needed help because he was waving his arms, then the man produced a handgun and demanded the victim’s personal belongings.

All Cordele residents, the trio includes 19 year old Kelvin Devon Ross, of a McCloud Circle address, Shaquaveon Montel Felder, 19, of 23rd Avenue W. and Kiera Patrice Bolden, 20 of an E. 5th Ave. address.

The perpetrators’ names leave no doubt as to their race: all are black.

The sheriff advises motorists who encounter anyone stopped on the side of the road or in the road to get around them as quickly as possible and call 911. “Do not stop if you can possibly avoid it,” Haralson says.

If it really is someone who needs help, law enforcement officers will be there to assist them soon if you call 911, he added.

Does Sheriff Haralson’s advice sound familiar?

Apr 2012: Carjacked and Beaten by 14-Year-Old Girls (Orangeburg County, SC)

“Teen girls plead guilty in carjacking case” (counton2.com):

Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell announces two 14-year-old girls pled guilty in Family Court Thursday to Sunday’s carjacking at Ashley and Mingo Streets.

Ravenell explains “The 21-year-old victim was giving the two girls, she did not know, a ride on Sunday evening because it was raining. After stopping at a house, one of the suspects got out of the vehicle to knock on the door. When that suspect returned, she pulled the victim out of the vehicle, threw her on the ground and kneed her in the head. The suspect got into the victim’s vehicle and drove off. Officers located the stolen vehicle on Tuesday near the intersection of Bramble Lane and Bonneville Drive in a wooded area. The suspects have been detained since Tuesday at the Department of Juvenile Justice on charges of carjacking, assault and battery — third degree, and driving without a license.”

Obviously, the media will not report the racial aspects of the crime, but the carjacking occurred at the intersection of Ashley and Mingo, and the car was left near the intersection of Bramble and Bonneville. Both are located in Brookdale, SC, which is 98% black (censusviewer.com), leaving no doubt as to the race of the perpetrators.

Apr 2012: Another Motorist Trap, Another Robbery at Gunpoint (Corpus Christi, TX)

“Police Update: Good Samaritan Robbed by Five People” (kztv10.com):

[...] Joshua Freeman (20), Rene Robinson (18), Amber Flores (20), Gilbert Gomez (21), and Keanu Davis (17) are all charged with aggravated robbery and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

[...]

Police say just after midnight the 19-year-old victim stopped to help a man in the 2000 block of Red Oak. When the victim moved his car to give the stranded motorist a jump start, he was threatened with a pistol.

Police say several other people then got out of the car and stole the victim’s valuables and his car keys. Officers were able to find the suspects and their vehicle on Glen Oak Drive.

Let’s see who decided to ambush and rob a 19-year-old by pretending their car broke down.

Apr 2012: Stabbed to Death over Five Dollars and Donuts (Seattle, WA)

“Prosecutors: Fatal stabbing suspect asked for help, then money” (komonews.com):

Police say a woman accused of fatally stabbing a man outside a North Seattle Krispy Kreme doughnut shop Monday was trying to rob the victim.

Karen R. Latham [picture below], 23, was ordered held on $1 million bail at her first court appearance Tuesday. Latham appeared visibly shaken and cried throughout the hearing without saying a word.

Latham told detectives she had just left a friend’s motor home in the 13500 block of Aurora Ave. N. and flagged down a car, according to court documents. She asked the driver, 54-year-old Zerabruk Hebtemariam, for a ride to a Jack in the Box located 10 blocks south. The fast food restaurant shares a parking lot with the doughnut shop.

Once they arrived, Latham asked Hebtemariam for money. The victim gave her $5 but Latham, unsatisfied, asked for more, prosecutors said.

When Hebtemariam refused, Latham pulled out a knife and again asked for more money, according to investigators. Hebtemariam again refused and tried to open the passenger door to push Latham out. She then stabbed him in the chest, according to prosecutors.

Latham walked off as Hebtemariam yelled that he had been stabbed.

Apr 2012: Beaten by Train Mob for Asking for Quiet (Portland, OR)

“Man asks teens on MAX to quiet down, gets assaulted” (katu.com):

A 57-year-old man who asked a group of teenagers to quiet down on a MAX train was assaulted on Friday.

Police were called to the Northeast 60th Avenue MAX platform around 5 p.m. on a report that multiple people were assaulting a man.

When officers arrived, they learned the man had asked a large group of around 15 to 20 black male teenagers to keep it down. That apparently didn’t sit well with the teenagers and some of them allegedly attacked the man.

Police made two arrests – a 15-year-old and 16-year-old were taken into custody. There may be additional arrests as the investigation continues and detectives get a chance to look at TriMet’s surveillance video.

The victim did not require medical attention but did tell us by phone that the incident was pretty traumatic. He declined an on-camera interview.

Feb 2012: Shot in the Head Defending Grandpa from Muggers (Los Angeles, CA)

“Third Suspect Charged In Slaying Of North Hollywood Man, Death Penalty Possible” (laist.com):

A third suspect has been charged in the shooting death of the 24-year-old man who died trying to rescue his 68-year-old grandfather from a trio of bandits.

Edwin Alexander Bonilla, 27, is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday afternoon on a slew of charges stemming from the January 9 murder of Danilo Estuardo Morales, including murder, attempted murder, assault with a firearm and second-degree robbery. CNS reports the murder charge includes the special circumstance allegation of murder during the commission of a robbery.

Two other suspects, 22-year-old Evin Adonis Ortiz and 29-year-old Rene Ramirez, were charged January 17 with the same crimes. Ramirez has been identified as the alleged gunman and has also been charged with possession of a firearm by a felon.

Morales rushed outside on the evening of January 9 after he heard his grandfather, Manuel Flores, calling for help and the sound of a gunshot in the driveway of Morales’ North Hollywood home in the 8100 block of Coldwater Canyon Avenue. He chased the suspects as they fled in their white Mitsubishi Montero, and one of the men, allegedly Ramirez, opened fire on him. Morales was struck in the head and pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Police are looking for three Hispanic males, ages 15 to 20 years old, in a “white or light-colored, possibly a Mitsubishi Montero, but definitely a midsize SUV, with a red reflector across the rear, and a punched-out rear window.”

Jan 2012: Gunned Down in Front of His Kids Defending Woman from Carjacker (New Orleans, LA)

“Loved ones and neighbors mourn loss of murdered Good Samaritan” (wwltv.com):

Bill Ainsworth describes his brother, Mike [picture below], as a loving father — a man who often put others first.

“He was a really good person all the way around,” Ainsworth said. “(He was) a Christian, helped anybody in any way possible.”

Wednesday, that selflessness cost 44-year-old Harry “Mike” Ainsworth his life, as he rushed to the aid of a woman who was being carjacked.

Police said the attacker managed to get inside the woman’s car, and, when Ainsworth jumped onto the hood of the vehicle to intervene, the suspect opened fire.

It all happened with Mike’s two sons looking on.

It’s a loss for the entire Algiers Point neighborhood, where Ainsworth was well-known as a construction worker, a great friend and an all-around nice guy.

“Always happy, hard working man, always had his two children with him, a very doting father. You saw the man, you saw the two boys. It’s just horrible. Horrible,” said neighbor Amy Duplessis. “Out of anybody it could’ve happened to, for it to happen to a man like that, it’s just devastating.”

Family members said Ainsworth leaves behind his two boys, his girlfriend, who is also the boys’ mother, and a daughter who lives in Florida.

“They loved their dad and their dad loved them. That was his world, his family,” said an emotional Bill Ainsworth. “I don’t know what I’m gonna do without him.”

Dec 2011: Robbed at Gunpoint of Wallet, Watch, and Wedding Ring in Yet Another Motorist Trap (Gaston County, NC)

“Good Samaritan attempts to help man with car trouble, gets robbed” (wbtv.com):

A Gaston County man who was attempting to be a Good Samaritan ended up getting robbed after someone pulled a gun on him.

According to police, 40-year-old Tim Ferrell was walking out of the JCPenney store at Eastridge Mall when he saw a man who appeared to be having car trouble and asked if he needed help.

That’s when police say the man lifted his shirt to show a gun stuck in the waist of his pants and demanded money from Ferrell.

The man then stole Ferrell’s wallet, watch and wedding ring.

The suspect was described as a black male, 6-foot-3, stocky-build, 240 pounds, clean shaven and was wearing a hoodie and jeans.

Nov 2011: Assaulted by Muslim Woman Then Charged with “Racially Aggravated Assault” for Asserting Equal Rights (London, England)

“‘I thought the innocent were protected… it’s been a hard lesson’: Celebrity photographer kicked by Muslim woman she tried to help tells of pain at being charged as a racist” (dailymail.co.uk):

She has heard them many times over the past few days, but speaking the words ‘racially aggravated assault’ still causes Cinnamon Heathcote-Drury’s entire body to shake and tears to stream down her face.

Her name may have been cleared, but it is obvious the scars of being accused of a vicious hate crime will be more difficult to erase.

Last Thursday, a jury at Isleworth Crown Court in West London took just 15 minutes to acquit her of shoving a pregnant Muslim woman to the floor and calling her husband a terrorist during a row in Tesco. [...]

To her, it often felt like being trapped in a dystopian world in which she could not make her version of events heard, no matter how hard she tried.

Although, in fact, she says she was the victim of assault, her own accusations were dismissed while her accusers’ claims were pursued by police.

Welcome to England’s Orwellian endgame, Miss Heathcote-Drury.

It was on November 30 last year [2011] that she unwittingly became embroiled in the extraordinary fracas at a Tesco superstore in West London.

She had been to see a friend and was on her way home to Kensington when she decided to pop into the store for some groceries at about 2pm.

She was waiting to pay at the checkout when she noticed a man with two small children also queuing. They were joined by a woman wearing a hijab and a long black tunic who began unloading an overflowing trolley, one item at a time.

She says: ‘I glanced over and thought, “This poor woman’s going to be there for hours.” Her husband was standing closest to me, so I said to him, “Will you help her?”

‘He said, “I’ve got the children.” I said, “Well, I can help her” and he replied, “What’s it to you?” I said, “This is what feminism’s about – women helping women.”

He said, “Oh, get lost.” I looked at the woman and said, “We live in a society in Britain where rights are equal – if you need help you can ask for it.”’

Very little was revealed in court about the couple, Abdelkrim Danyaoui and Mounia Hamoumi, aside from his stated occupation of ‘teacher’ and the fact that Mrs Hamoumi had been pregnant at the time of the incident.

And so a third small child joins the Danyaoui-Hamoumi family of London, while Miss Heathcote-Drury enjoys the single life, teaching photography to the city’s “disadvantaged students” and explaining Western feminism to women in headscarves.

The couple became infuriated. ‘The husband came up behind me and said in my ear, “You f*** off,” which I found very intimidating,’ Miss Heathcote-Drury says. ‘I wanted to get out of the shop as quickly as possible, but he approached me again.’

She called for a security guard and when one arrived, he began speaking to the man. Meanwhile, Miss Heathcote-Drury, who had paid for her shopping, was making her escape down the aisle when she claims she felt a sharp pain in her left shin and stumbled.

‘The woman was standing with her hand on her hip and smirking. She wanted to humiliate me. Then she hit me on the left cheek.’

According to Miss Heathcote-Drury, a struggle ensued in which she was kicked in the right shin and her hat was wrenched from her head before the woman lost her balance and fell.

In shock and trembling, Miss Heathcote-Drury was led to a back room to wait until two police officers arrived. They took her name, date of birth and address, and then left. When they returned after speaking to the couple, she was told she was being arrested for racially aggravated assault.

Miss Heathcote-Drury describes in detail the inept and biased investigation that led to her charges, including this highlight:

A duty solicitor arrived and explained that the couple had claimed Miss Heathcote-Drury had used the words ‘suicide bomber’ and ‘terrorist’, called the man a ‘bad feminist’ and said they were probably on jobseekers’ allowance. She was then interviewed.

‘I said that I hadn’t used the words “suicide bomber”, but the officer asked me how I would feel, as a Muslim, being called that,’ she says.

I imagine she might have exploded.

Oct 2011: Blown Away Defending Robbery Victim (Santa Clarita, CA)

“One Shot, One Killed Outside Shopping Center” (nbclosangeles.com):

A Good Samaritan was killed and another person was injured in a shooting outside a Canyon Country shopping center Monday afternoon.

The shooting was part of an apparent robbery attempt around 3:08 p.m. near Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway.

The injured victim arranged to meet four suspects to sell a Nintendo DS Game System, according to sheriff’s detectives. When the suspects attempted to rob the victim, someone believed to be a Good Samaritan, approached the suspects with a baseball bat.

The Good Samaritan was shot in the chest by one of the suspects and went into full arrest when paramedics arrived on scene. The first victim [attempted] to run away and was shot in the thigh and was said to be in critical condition.

Neither victim has been identified.

Both were rushed to a local trauma center, where the Good Samaritan was pronounced dead.

Police have since taken all four suspects believed to be connected to the shooting into custody, sheriff’s deputy Lillian Peck said.

The shooting took place just past 3:00 p.m. near Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway., and it’s unclear what the motivation was. Both victims were taken to the hospital, and police say that four black males are the primary suspects.

Sep 2011: Knifed for Politely Protesting Bus Abuse of Pregnant and Elderly Women (London, England)

“Knife thug jailed for stabbing Good Samaritan who stood up for fellow bus passengers” (standard.co.uk):

A teenage knife thug has been jailed for stabbing a Good Samaritan who tried to stop him from abusing fellow bus passengers.

Sanchez Brown was jailed along with another youth after they started abusing passengers on the 488 bus between Dalston and Bromley-by-Bow.

Brown, 19 and Blake Mehmet, also 19 became abusive to passengers — including a pregnant lady and group of elderly women as they travelled on the bus on 14 September last year.

At one point Brown refused to move his legs to allow a pregnant lady with a pram to move past.

He blocked the aisle again as the bus approached Parnell Road E3.

Artist Tim Smits, 32, politely asked Brown to move and show some consideration to his fellow passengers.

Brown approached him and began to threaten him before punching him several times in the head. The victim restrained Brown and tried to defuse the situation but Mehmet joined in, also punching Mr Smits.

This gave Brown the chance to take out a knife and stab the victim several times in the stomach and leg.

The suspects then fled.

Brown, of Lower Clapton Road, E5, was jailed for a minimum of six and a half years after pleading guilty to GBH [grievous bodily harm] with intent at a previous court hearing.

Mehmet was jailed for four months for public order offences.

Tim Smits, having been treated and released from hospital, “later said he believed other Londoners should do more to back each other up if trouble flares.”

“It’s about power in number – the more people who step into help, the better.

“If three or four people on the bus would have backed me up, would he have stabbed them all? [...]”

Interesting question. “Just a month later, on October 13, Brown left a student with a fractured eye socket after robbing him outside Hackney Downs railway station” (hackneygazette.co.uk), a crime the Evening Standard characterized as “a separate stabbing” (standard.co.uk).

Jun 2011: Punched to Death Shaking Hand of Illegal Mexican Immigrant with Stalled Van (Wenatchee, WA)

“Quick guilty verdict in ‘Good Samaritan’ killing” (wenatcheeworld.com):

Juan M. González-González was convicted Wednesday of manslaughter in the death of a man who came to his aid last summer.

A Chelan County jury of eight women and four men found González, 51, guilty of throwing a single punch June 2 that knocked José Guadalupe García-Sevilla unconscious, causing him to fracture his skull against the pavement when he fell near the intersection of Ferry and Mission streets. The Mexican-born repairman, 53, died the next day.

The jury, which deliberated just two hours, found that González attacked García while he was acting under the legal definition of a Good Samaritan, approaching González to help with a van that had irreparably stalled on Ferry Street next to the El Tapatillo taco truck where García was chatting with the owner.

González punched García unconscious, then punched and scuffled with Wenatchee Police Officer Jared Reinfeld when he came to investigate the scene. The jury convicted González of third-degree assault and attempting to disarm a police officer based on that latter confrontation.

[Chelan County Prosecutor Gary] Riesen said testimony showed García was one of a number of people at the scene who were moving to help González. His handshake alone was a gesture of trust that left him vulnerable.

“What’s his return for this friendly gesture? He gets smacked, hard,” Riesen told the jury. “… His left hand was in his pocket, he was so unaware there was a potential for being hurt here.”

González, who listened to his trial through a Spanish translator, did not testify in his own defense, leaving the question of why he attacked García unanswered.

When arrested, González was known under the name Ricardo Hernandez, with a different birthdate. At sentencing, Riesen submitted evidence that González used at least 15 different aliases while living in California during the 1990s. He has been deported at least once, and was convicted in 2001 of unlawfully returning to the United States.

His prior record, pieced together through fingerprints in his FBI National Crime Information Center file, includes one conviction for burglary and three for taking a motor vehicle without permission between 1992 and 1995, all in San Diego County, Riesen said.

Apr 2011: Stomped to Death in Street by Young Couple in Incest Argument (New York City, NY)

“Couple arraigned on charges they stomped an elderly man to death amid domestic dispute” (nydailynews.com):

A pair of lovebirds facing life as jailbirds were arraigned Sunday on charges they capped a boozy date by stomping a would-be good Samaritan to death in the street.

Quintin Guerrero, 61, was killed when he rushed to aid one of his accused attackers, Tosheba Alford [picture below], 20, after she jumped out of a moving cab in front of his Bronx house to escape a beating from her boyfriend [picture below], Alford’s mother, Queen Smith, said.

[Smith] told reporters her daughter called her from the cab when Major started hitting her, accusing her of having an incestuous relationship with her brother.

Smith said her daughter jumped out of the moving cab, hurting her leg. She limped over and sat down on Guerrero’s front stoop, prompting the victim to come out of his house and check on her.

As Guerrero was asking Alford if she was hurt, Major jumped out of the cab, pummeled Guerrero to the ground and kicked him repeatedly, Alford told her mother.

Oct 2010: Strangled by Serial Rapist while Handing Strangers Change for Laundry (Racine, WI)

“Why Was Good Samaritan Murder Suspect Free?” (todaystmj4.com):

Police believe repeat sex offender Wilbert Thomas [picture below] beat Sandra Teichow [picture below], strangled her, and left her body in the woods. The question now is, why was Thomas a free man?

Sandra Teichow, 67, was known for her charity work, and that’s exactly what she was doing last week when she was murdered. Investigators believe Teichow was handing out quarters to strangers at a Laundromat when she met Wilbert Thomas.

Thomas has three sexual assault convictions going back more than 45 years. In a 1991 case, he allegedly assaulted a bartender. [...]

So how did Thomas end up a free man again? After he served his sentence, prosecutors tried to get Thomas locked away indefinitely, saying he was a danger to society. But the effort was unsuccessful.

Thomas has been free for the last several years, and court records show he hasn’t reported his location to the sex offender registry in the last year.

Even if Thomas had been locked up indefinitely, he might still be a free man today. The courts have let some long-term commitment offenders go when they reach old age. Thomas is 65.

Jul 2010: Carjacked and Robbed at Gunpoint — Young Couple Got Off Light for Kindness (Peoria, IL)

“Stranger returns kindness by robbing couple” (pjstar.com):

A man and a woman who gave a ride to a stranger Monday afternoon were robbed of cash and ordered to drive their robber around town.

The victims, a 24-year-old Peoria man and a 19-year-old Peoria Heights woman, were outside Planned Parenthood, 705 NE Jefferson Ave., about 1:40 p.m. Monday when a man asked them for a ride.

The man, described as a black male, 6 feet 5 inches tall, 220 pounds and wearing a T-shirt, jeans and a red baseball cap, sat in the back seat of the vehicle and directed the driver where to go.

He then pulled out a gun and pointed it at the woman, who was sitting in the front passenger seat. He demanded money, and she gave him $250 cash, according to a report from the Peoria Police Department.

The robber eventually directed the vehicle to Molleck Drive near the Aspen Bluff Apartments, where he fled on foot.

They really got off light: assuming the victims were white — and who else is so afraid of being perceived as “racist” that they would offer a strange black man a ride? — these sorts of crimes often end in torture, rape, and murder.

Jan 2010: Saved from Sawed-off Shotgun by Cop Car Crash (Trenton, NJ)

“Hamilton man to serve 12 years in prison for 2011 carjacking” (nj.com):

A judge showed no mercy Tuesday for a township man who carjacked a good Samaritan at gunpoint on New Year’s morning in 2011.

Keenan Trower [picture below], 20, of Soloff Drive pleaded guilty to carjacking a 35-year-old Trenton man who was giving him a lift home.

The man managed to escape by ramming his car into a police car parked in a convenience store parking lot.

According to prosecutors, the victim was about to go inside his South Olden Avenue home shortly after midnight Jan. 1 when Trower approached him and asked for a ride home.

Trower promised the man, whom he did not know, money for the trip.

When they arrived at Trower’s home, Trower told the victim he would go inside and get the money. Instead Trower returned with a sawed-off shotgun and robbed the man of $59. At gunpoint he ordered the victim to drive to the victim’s bank. En route, the victim saw a police car parked in a parking lot and drove his car into the vehicle. He jumped out of the car and yelled to police that he was being robbed at gunpoint. The two officers chased down Trower and arrested him.

On Tuesday, Assistant Prosecutor Rachel Cook, speaking for the victim, said the man was forever changed by the encounter.

“He was acting as a good Samaritan,” Cook said. “Because of this incident he no longer feels he can be as open with people in need. He finds himself to be more alert, more paranoid, more on edge.”

“He doesn’t want anyone else to go through what he did at the hands of this defendant,” Cook said. “He wants the defendant to learn a lesson and stop victimizing people in the community.”

Sep 2008: Beaten to Death Protecting Woman from Car Thief with 13 Arrests (New York City, NY)

“Delay by cops let a killer go; D.A. blames missing drug-test results” (nydailynews.com):

The NYPD blew a chance to keep a homeless drug addict in jail just days before he pummeled a beloved Queens dad to death, prosecutors said Friday.

Prosecutors said they were forced to spring Eric Cherry on Aug. 25 because cops didn’t bother to fax over completed drug lab results proving he had been caught with crack five days earlier.

“The court had no choice but to release the defendant,” said Office of Court Administration spokesman David Bookstaver.

Cherry, 43, was charged with manslaughter yesterday in the brutal Wednesday beating of Nicholas Nowillo, 67.

An NYPD spokesman disputed the district attorney’s version, insisting the lab sent the results over in time for the Aug. 25 deadline.

“They were delivered on the 25th. We hand-delivered them,” said Assistant Chief Michael Collins. “Nobody requested an additional copy. We did our job. We locked this guy up 13 times. They… let him go.”

But prosecutors said it was the second time NYPD lab delays allowed Cherry to walk free in two months.

The drug-addled veteran was released from the same Queens courtroom on July 23 because a positive lab report wasn’t sent over until July 24, after the five-day deadline had expired, prosecutors said.

Cherry pleaded guilty to another crack possession charge on Aug. 19 and was sentenced to time served — five days in jail. He had been in and out of jail for at least 10 arrests since November 2006, court records show.

An autopsy revealed that Cherry shattered nine of Nowillo’s ribs during the beating on a Long Island City street about 10:40 p.m., prosecutors said.

The chivalrous victim had just walked a neighbor to her car to protect her from Cherry, who was trying to break into vehicles on the block, prosecutors said. Nowillo — who had lived on the block for more than 30 years — suffered from heart problems and diabetes.

The homeless Cherry punched Nowillo, then grabbed him and tossed him to the ground, where he continued kicking and punching him until Nowillo suffered a fatal heart attack, prosecutors said.

Sep 2008: Fatally Knifed Saving Woman from Serial Stabber (Auckland, New Zealand)

“Hemmings’ murderer jailed for at least 16 years” (nzherald.co.nz):

The man who admitted killing “good Samaritan” Austin Hemmings has been sentenced to a minimum of 16 years imprisonment.

Pauesi Leofa Brown, 47, was today sentenced for the murder of Mr Hemmings in September 2008.

Brown stabbed Mr Hemmings when the 44-year-old stepped between him and a woman he was arguing with, Diane Nonu, at the bottom of a central Auckland building.

In sentencing, Justice Geoffrey Venning questioned whether Brown was truly remorseful.

“Most prisoners who are sentenced say they are sorry,” he said.

“I do not yet consider you have shown true remorse in this case.”

Judge Venning said Brown continued to justify his actions and had failed to take responsibility for what he had done.

The murderer is a Pacific Islander, likely Maori; his victim was white (pictures below).

Pauesi Leofa Brown’s criminal history makes a strong case for the death penalty: why was this man left alive to kill again?

The Herald revealed last month that Brown had repeatedly stabbed his estranged girlfriend in the neck and chest while they were living in Melbourne in 1992.

He was charged with murder, but the charge was reduced to manslaughter and he was convicted in December 1993.

Brown was also jailed in New Zealand on three separate occasions for knife incidents dating back to 1987.

A depositions hearing last year heard that on September 25, Brown waited in Mills Lane, downtown Auckland, where he knew the woman, who has name suppression, had cigarette breaks.

That afternoon, she came to have a cigarette break and was on her mobile phone when she saw Brown.

Mr Glubb said Brown at some stage came towards her and tried to corner her and in a demanding voice asked what she had been saying about him.

She tried to get to the entrance back to the lift to her work, but Brown again blocked her.

Mr Hemmings then emerged down Mills Lane, at which point the woman asked him to call police.

“At that point, Mr Hemmings said ‘what’s going on’,” Mr Glubb said.

“The defendant said ‘It’s none of your business’.”

Mr Glubb said Mr Hemmings then got between Brown and the woman. She then ran towards the lift which would take her back to her work.

He said Brown then ran towards her, and she saw him pull up his jersey, where she saw what she thought was a knife.

Mr Glubb said she then saw him go back towards Mr Hemmings.

He said she saw him pull his right arm towards himself, and then “saw a fast thrust forward at Mr Hemmings”.

Mr Glubb said Brown then went back towards the woman, who was getting into the lift.

He said Brown forced his way into the lift and then swung a knife at her, which she managed to avoid, before he left.

Mr Hemmings staggered to the intersection of Mills Lane and Swanson St, where he collapsed.

He received immediate medical attention but died at the scene of a stab wound, Mr Glubb said.
